The last fishing of the year 2003 at Uratan fishing area

photo by Mr. K                                        photo by Mr. I
The left is upper reaches and the right is lower reaches at my favorite point " the Sidewinder",
Fishes were almost staying still at the bottom but my floating ant brought me about ten yamame here.
The strong wind also helped me in my midge fishing.
It was very cold windy day but we had a fun of the year-end fishing party in snow.

07/December/2k3
after long rain of the end of fall
It was clearly fine today.
We enjoyed fishing and drinking
Minoru-san presented Shochu to Mr.K
and Mr.K shared Shochu with  Mr. I, Mr.M, Mr.Minoru & I.
Thank you very much, Minoru-san & Mr. K !

"Madara" is Shochu, distilled spirits,
Madara is made from  rice
The alcoholic content is 25%

The word "sake" in Japan can actually refer to all alcoholic beverages in general, although it most often refers to the wine-like rice brew so tightly associated with that word overseas. But in some parts of Japan, most notably the far western and southern regions, the word sake is understood to refer to a totally different alcoholic beverage, also indigenous to Japan, but distilled and not brewed: shochu.

"Madara" is a local name of Yamame in Kuma district of Kumamoto prefecture in Kyushu Japan.
Thanks again Miroru-san

still water midge fishing of late fall

Midge fishing is the silence and the beauty

08/November/2k3
We played at Hanafuda ('flower cards') today.
Hnanafuda is a set of traditional playing cards dating back to the Edo era.
I was taught it in my child age and nowadays it is not so popular in  Japan.
Hanafuda becomes an old game now for a family relaxing time.
I thought to teach Japanese traditional play to my daughter.

Yume is recording each points of the player(herself, my wife, and I)  finished the first game.

Hanafuda cards are printed on tiny pasteboards, about 2.1 inches by 1.3 inches.
This size is just fit for children's small hands.
There are 12 suite within it and 4 per suite. Each suite represents a different month of the year
as well as the particular flower at bloom during that time of a year in Japan.
Each card is illustrated with the flower for that suite,
with things like the moon, plum blossoms, bush clover, and pine trees.
below what we call, Ino-Shika-Chou which is one of good melds,

wild boar(Inoshishi) among bush clover, deer(Shika) in a maple forest, butterflies(Chou) above a Peony,

The Japanese small world of natural beauty and poetic sentiment is in the designs of Hanafuda
which is what we call
The essence of Kacho-fugetsu is in aesthetic sense and poetic sentiment of human being

If you have taken interest in Hanafuda, please visit here (Hnanfuda game)
You may change its designs by yourself into seasonal flowers and animals of your homeland,
and Let's play Hanafuda!

ant fly fishing

We held the Conference of Super Midge Rogan's Club at Uratanzawa, fishing area.
Ant-fly fascinated yamame.

11~12/October/2k3
We made an overnight trip to Kiyosato.
When we found a flower on a walking path a tiny spider was drinking a morning dew of it.
When I brought my camera close to the flower he hid himself behind a petal.

Yume posed for the statue of Eve as usual

05/October/2k3
a fine autumn day!
Most yamame are going to change their body color  for spawning.
Floating ant-fly was better than sinking it today.

All  that's Kaba!    my favorite Kaba-tackles & tools
added Kaba-knife

23/September/2k3
fine day!
I saw many couples of red dragonflies flying in tandem in clear sky.
outing to visit the Kaikou Takeshi memorial house in Chigasaki.

It has been 14 years after the death of Kaikou Takeshi (1930~1989)

14/September
Hot day!
The lingering heat of late summer was intense but we were caught in a shower with thunder
in the September Conference of Super Midge Rogan's Club at Uratan.
We could play with many trout in the morning and after a shower too.

Many yamame rose to the ant fly.
The ant is the best seasonal fly even in September
We drank so much beer.

06/September/2k3

by the way I took this may-fly close-up by Ricoh digital camera Caplio 300G
of course I'm an amateur in photography but I can shoot easily close-up like this.
in this case I didn't use any tripod and
I could shoot this close-up holding it only by hands.

13/August/2k3
I went fishing with Mr. akio
The damage of stream by the typhoon #10 was almost recovered.
I hooked a rare yamame which parr marks are fading out

please click above to enlarge

When I hooked a yamame she jumped high and
I saw a  pale blue silhouette against the setting sun.

I made one "haiku" from my impression

yuu-hi-seni  haneru-yamame-ya kage-e-nari

19/July/2k3

I went fishing to Uratanzawa stream fishing area with my friend, Takashi.
I introduce Uratanzawa staffs.
Mr. Inoue, owner of this area, he also breeds Uratan Yamame perfectly
Mr. Sekido is a nice keeper of Uratan stream and his son Ryota is 1st year student.

We are always much indebted to you for your great endeavor.
Thank you very much for all your help.

Takashi hooked a sculpin called "Kajika" in Japanese.

I saved drowned "Higurashi" cicada.

She flew saying thanks after this shot.

Our brotherly bonds were introduced in the Italian flyfishing magazine " Fly Line" by Roberto-san.
The title "Heart to Heaven" is the name of my reel specially made by Geppetto-san, my elder brother.
Il cuore per il Paradiso
I will tell this account to Kenichi when I will meet him il Paradiso.
Geppetto-san may be with Kenichi because he is older than I. (laughing, sorry for Geppetto-san)

"Piuma in Paradiso" by Bjarne-san is also mentioned in this page.
Thanks a lot Roberto-san and Geppetto-san, also Paolo-san.

ant #26 fly and real ant

I used " my ant" flies only all day long and my ant hit so many yamames.
Mr. K & Mr. I also enjoyed a day of May with their own midge flies as usual.

Mr. Takashi Ichikawa, my best fishing friend in Japan
made his original lures for grandchildren of Geppetto-san and for me.
I will send a pair of his lures to Modena Italy as soon as I can.
Geppetto-san's grandchildren will be able to spend their summer holidays in fishing with Takashi's lures

12/April
The 3rd Conference of " Super Midge Rogan's Club" was held in full of laughing on Sunday 06/April.

09/April
We have not yet heard the calling voice of "Kenken" this year,
a pheasant who comes to a vacant lot near my house every year.
How is he?

We would be happy if he had gotten a partner in life.

30/March
We held the 2nd Conference of "Super midge Rogan's club" at Uratan fishing area today.
Yamame has become beautiful day by day.
Mr. K & Mr. I practiced to use very fine tippet and they got many beautiful yamames.
Whenever we missed to hit yamame we laughed and had joyful and happy day with the present from the nature.

22/March
It would be warmer and warmer from tomorrow here in Japan.
Water color let me feel so and also let me make Haiku " Stream Spring".

18/March,
I went to the Pine-Lake a few days ago with my friend Mr. Akio.
I used my favorite tackles, #2 floating system only.
I hit some big rainbows but I could not get them in my hand.
They pulled out my backing line all and run away.
The Noodle, my rod was perfect and my small anti-reverse Dallari reel worked well.
My flies were effective enough
Old Stalky the first (#21 baetis nymph) and final emerging Stalky (#32 midge Dry)

but I mistook selection of a size of tippet for big rainbows ( though I could get three of 30's cm).
(  my fine tippet, 0.065mm diameter may be equivalent to 10x or so)

Next time I will try again with twin of 0.049mm tippet. And I want to get some of 50 cm over trout.
My intention is to test to use the same tackle both in a stream and in a lake.

Please click on above photo to see fighting with rainbow.
The rainbow jumped and ran away after a few second of this scene.
Then he showed me his body by jumping.
( I used Akio's fly in this fight, it was also very effective fly.)

9/March,
What a nice midging rod Bjarne-san has produced!!! How effortless casting could be!!!
This is my first impression of The Noodle.
I went Yamame-fishing to a stream with a new rod, "The Noodle" (English , Japanese).
I got 10 Yamame , about size 22 or 23 cm.
Of course there were no problems in casting and catching.
The Noodle have enough reserve of its power in a stream.
I could catch them all without line-break, although my tippet is very thin, 0.049mm Diameter.
I will try next with The Noodle at a lake area named Pine Lake.
I think I would fall in love with The Noodle that day as Bjarne-san says.

"Super midge Rogan's club"
Mr. I & Mr. K, both my Japanese Internet friends and I
We are super midge fishermen (laughing) and also our sight have already deteriorated with age.
Today we held the first Conference of "Super midge Rogan's club". (Presbyopia is "Rogan" in Japanese)

We had heavy snow two days ago so the river bed has been covered by a blanket of snow.

Because of a thaw water flowing in, the water temperature of the stream  was very low
and Yamames are fixed at a bottom of the stream.
Though there were some hatches, small stonefly and chironomids
there are not any rise of Yamame in the morning.
In the evening I could get some Yamames by my no-hackle sidewinder midge #32.

It is still cold but we can certainly feel coming Spring in the body color of Yamame.
The new rod is shown in above photos.

05/March/2k3
I got a wonderful rod from Bjarne-san today. The Noodle has come to me.
Beauty and Sensibility with Strength and authentic nobility,,, The Noodle has all.

I will report my first experience on the stream soon.

The Noodle made by Bjarne-san for me

additionally Christian Ulbricht's site is also worth to visit soon.
Also sweets on a white dish are Sachertorte and Mozartkugel,
both are some of the most traditional specialities of Austria.

forecast of my flyfishing 2003

I'll feel smell of forest
I'll feel smell of stream
I'll feel smell of woods
because they are breathing

I'll hear birds calling
I'll hear stream flowing
I'll hear leaves touching
because they are living

I'll be sitting on a rock of riverside
I'll be watching dancing of mayflies
I'll be hearing splash of trout rise

What will I do then in such situation?
stupid to choose next fly
clever to do nothing any more

After all it would be all of my flyfishing as usual

I'll tie my fly
I'll clean up my rod
I'll grease up my reel
I'll maintain my silk line
,,,,,,,

Let it be so as it would be so.
