I like midge fishing.

23/November/2k2
It is cold today. All the leaves are falling. Winter has come near the corner.
When it becomes colder my fly stock becomes larger.

Ayu kebari (Japanese traditional fly for Ayu- fishing, Japanese fish having adipose fin)
I got these flies at an antique shop. Tippets were made from silk worm gut.

I don't know when and who used these flies.
These are very rare flies so that I don't use in my flyfishing.

Please move your mouse pointer on this pic.
You can see a modified #32 hook and a short tying process of my brown winged "Stalky Black".

Traditional (since 1830's at least) Japanese fly
Ayu Kebari
Ayu is the name of Japanese fish which has not smell of fish
but a little bit like water melon, we call her a flavorful fish., sweet fish.

with tippet, we call "Tegusu"
It is silk worm gut.
Recently I could get a little bit of natural silk worm gut, what we call " Hon Tegusu"
In Japan the gold beads head has been used in Ayu Kebari-making
since 1800's as a imitation of a bubble of tiny aquatic insects.
Ayu Kebari fishing was almost monopolized for samurai in Kanazawa city in Edo period.
Holding a long and heavy rod in fishing was practice of "Kendo"
to become a master swordsman( same as holding "Nihonto" or "Katana", a Japanese sword)

about my fly hook Dec.2.2001

I usually use the hook which I modified the shape of it
in order to improve ability of hooking of it.

Here are my modified hook # 32 compared with normal shape of Tiemco #32.

right is my hook
wider gape,down-eye and barb-less and a rolled-in point,
this type has the point bent in toward the shank of the hook
just like ,what we call, " Nemuri-bari", "Hell Hook" or  "Hage-bari" in Japan.

I named my fly "Old Stalky" after the Heron which Sawyer named so,
in his book "  Man of  the Riverside".

OLD STALKY & SAWYER'S PT

I tied this using 3 or 4 fibers of Heron quill at first as a pupa of midge,
After trying to use various fibers for 5 or 6 years,
I have now absolute confidence with this Old Stalky.
This is tied by 4 fibers of speckled peacock quill
together very fine golden copper wire using Sawyer's way.
Old Stalky imitates not only Yusurika-midge but also Kokagerou(baetis nymph)
Though the lighter colors in the abdomen segments is important,
I could  imitate it by using  speckled peacock fiber.

"In all branches of angling, simplicity is an aim to be pursued,
and simplicity can indeed be adopted in both dry-fly and nymph fishing, especially the latter.".

These are tied by Bjarne-san.

bamboo tweezer is necessary to pic up midge fly from flybox.

I use #32 midge fly which is smaller than a sesame.
midge fly holder is necessary to hold my fly " Old Stalky the Second"
when I tie tippet and when I remove fly from the mouth of trout.

I usually design my fly by a photo or a sketch like this.

hatching midge Yusurika tied on #32 Tiemco hook
(photo of yusurika-midge is attached under permission of Mr. Takax who has a great Japanese fishing web site)
