from A Child of The Bowl For Alms

On February 1925 it was. At last I took the ceremony for a monk

and became a guardian of Mitori Bodhisattva Temple in a remote place in Higo; the Kumamoto province. My life there was just of a hermit, who lived alone in mountains and forests.

If you would say it was a quiet life, it was quiet. If you would say it lonely, it was a lonely life.

for mornings and evenings

I strike chiming bells

In April 1926, carrying my puzzles with no ways of solution on my back,

I travelled out for wandering pilgrimages.

steps into one

steps into another

the mountain green

dripping all wet this is

a stone for my road mark

heated sky for my alms

I wander with my bowl

Making the life and death clear is the most important and fatal for a Buddhist monk.

    (Zen Sutra)

in life and death

snow falls down thick

During the years of 1927 and 1928, I wandered in the San-indo provinces and sometime in the Shikoku and Kyushu provinces.

I step forward making my way

among my dear hagi bushes and eulalias

on my hat a dragonfly

resting I walk

too straight a lane

too lonesome

Silently and calmly tipsy

leaves fall down from trees

never I see it again in my life

a mountain goes away from me

I push myself forward then

water sounds

my monk's gown

so much tattered

with seeds of grass

no clouds at all

removed the hat

such tasty water

brimming over

Together with water sounds

I stepped down to a village

intoxicated

I was sleeping with crickets

into an iron bowl

hails

my birth place now afar

spring buds

thanks for a meal satisfied

I finish a single table

Muddy road rain-showered

step by step I forward to go
